ADHESIVES AND SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY: COMMUNITY DIRECTIVES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Everyone who works in the field of shipbuilding knows how strict the regulation regarding the materials is. Naval equipment must pass tough tests: flammability and resistance in case of mishaps must be proved because a highly toxic environment could arise onboard.
The adhesives must have specific certifications  to meet the safety standards in the European Community. In this article, we are going to clarify which these certifications are.

DIRECTIVE 2014/90/EU OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 23 July 2014 on marine equipment and repealing Council Directive 96/98/EC (MED)

The first Directive is DIRECTIVE 2014/90/EU (MED). It aims to increase sea travel safety and prevent sea pollution.

How does it work? It regulates marine equipment such as radiocommunication systems, building materials, and fire-resistant building materials. The certification procedure according to MED starts with a request to an accredited certification body like CSI. Compliant products are marked with a helm pictogram on the label.

RINA REQUIREMENTS

Another certification body to mention is RINA: active in 70 countries, it regulates many fields and among them, there is the civil and military shipbuilding industry.

RINA requires everyone who works in the field of shipbuilding or marine equipment to successfully complete the certification process demanded by the Safety Management System according to ISO 45001:2018 and Directive 2014/90/UE (MED).
